Italian is spelled as it sounds, with one catch: a double consonant is held longer, like the t in notte and latte. Stress usually falls on the second-to-last syllable, and an accent is written only when it falls on the last, as in già. Italian splits to know in two: sapere for facts and skills, conoscere for people and places. Macchina is the everyday word for a car.
